On Court Player Development; Reads, Finishes, and Game Rhythm Shots

Artur Labinowicz is a very talented basketball player, I had the privilege of working with during my time with the Iowa Wolves this past season.

In this on court player development workout we incorporated ball handling drills, with finishes, game rhythm shots, to reads. This type of workout that incorporates a variety of skills is much more beneficial to a player of Arts caliber than, “make 10 3’s at 7 spots”, don’t get me wrong, volume shooting, stationary ball handling drills, it’s all needed, and has it’s place in player development.

That being said, I believe if you can incorporate such drills in an environment that resembles more of a game, then the player development needle will move much faster.

Drills

2 Ball Combo, Finish, Read; A variety of 2 ball dribbling drills-Pound, Machine Gun, Side to Side.. To a finish versus me and the Realistick (a MUST for all coaches of all levels) .. To a read, if I closed short, he would shoot it, if I ran him off the line, he’d attack. 2×5 reps passing to each side.

1 Ball Combo, Finish, Open Shot, Read; A variety of ball handling moves, incorporating off-arm work as well, to attacking the rim with a variety of finishes.. To an open game rhythm shot.. To a read versus me. 2×5 reps from each wing.

We worked these spots because this is where Art would operate from in our offense, and finishing through contact is something he wanted to work on. That being said, you always have a blank canvas, creativity and communication are your biggest strengths, so use them and create the environment your player needs to improve.

Thanks for viewing and create a great day! -Coach T
